Dictionary of Literary Biography on Johann Wilhelm von Stubenberg
Johann Wilhelm von Stubenberg's contribution to German baroque literature consists not in creative work but in his translations of major literary, moralistic, and practical treatises from French, Italian, and English into German. He was honored for these achievements by being invited to become a member of the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft (Fruit-bringing Society) in Nuremberg. He had close contacts with writers such as Catharina Regina von Greiffenberg and Johann Beer and influenced their work through his translations. Stubenberg was one of the first to recognize Greiffenberg's poetic talent, and he recommended her to the well-known Nuremberg poet Sigmund von Birken.
Stubenberg was born on 22 April 1619 in Neustadt in Bohemia to Rudolf von Stubenberg and his third wife, Justina, née von Zelking, both of whom came from old Austrian aristocratic families.
