Dictionary of Literary Biography on Johann V(alentin) Andreae
One of the most intriguing literary figures of baroque Germany is the Lutheran theologian, utopian, and mystic writer Johann Valentin Andreae. Andreae is known not only for the substantial corpus of his acknowledged works but also for anonymous works that have been attributed to him. Because he admitted authorship of Chymische Hochzeit: Christiani Rosencreutz (1616; translated as The Hermetick Romance, 1690), many believe that he was also the author of the Fama Fraternitatis (1615) and the "Confessio Fraternitatis" (1615). These three texts are collectively called the Rosencreutzer Schriften (Rosicrucian Writings) and form the foundation for a literary tradition, as well as for a fraternal organization that is still active. Andreae's Reipublicæ Christianopolitanæ Descriptio (1619; translated as Christianopolis , 1916) is an important example of utopian literature with far-reaching literary and social effects.
