Dictionary of Literary Biography on Johann Heinrich Jung-Stilling

Johann Heinrich Jung used the name Henrich Stilling when, in his twenties, he wrote the first parts of his autobiography; he derived the name "Stilling" from the phrase "Stillen im Lande" (quiet in the land) of Psalm 35:20. He is best known today for his life story, in which he aimed to demonstrate providential guidance as the major motivating force in his life. Jung-Stilling, as he is generally called, was much influenced by a Protestant Pietism that gave priority to inner conviction rather than to the Bible. He was also familiar with the ideas of the Enlightenment and welcomed Immanuel Kant's attempt at reconciling reason with faith. As a university teacher Jung-Stilling published writings on socioeconomic subjects. His social and religious concerns, together with his emphasis on the family and education, find ample expression in his autobiography and in the four novels he published from 1779 to 1785.
