Joanne Greenberg's most popular book was, for many years, also "kind of a secret book," the author once said in Top of the News. Greenberg used the pseudonym Hannah Green to disguise her authorship of I Never Promised You a Rose Garden because the story is based on her own experiences as a teenager struggling with schizophrenia. She was afraid that people in her community would reject her and her young children if they knew that she had once been institutionalized. By asking her husband's coworkers about schizophrenia, she quickly discovered the prejudices that people foster: most of them told her they believed that the mental disease was incurable.
