Dictionary of Literary Biography on Jean Charbonneau
Jean Charbonneau was well known as a poet, dramatist, literary critic, and historian. From 1893 to 1901 he also acted, with a troupe called Soirées de Famille, using the stage name Delagny. Under this same name he first published his poetry in literary journals between 1895 and 1900. Meanwhile he organized close to one hundred of his troupe's presentations. During 1894 and 1895 he was a member of the literary Groupe des Six Eponges (Group of Six Sponges). Charbonneau is remembered not so much for his own poetry, which was plentiful, but for his role in the development of literature in Quebec. He was cofounder (with Louvigny de Montigny) of the Ecole Littéraire de Montréal in 1895, serving a term as its president from 1907 to 1909.
