Dictionary of Literary Biography on Hubert Reginald Evans
Hubert Evans was a writer for most of his ninety-four years. He described himself as "a man who chose a varied life mostly outdoors, loved it and wanted to write about it." His classic novel Mist on the River (1954) William H. New has called "an historic document as much as a work of art." And for his last novel, O Time in Your Flight! (1979), Margaret Laurence lovingly titled him "the elder of our tribe."
Evans was born in 1892 in Vankleek Hill, Ontario, and grew up in Galt near the Mohawk Reserve. He left school early to work on the Galt Reporter and in 1910 moved to Toronto as a reporter, first with the Mail and Empire and then with Toronto World.
