Dictionary of Literary Biography on Hermann Bote
Hermann Bote, one of the great masters of Low German, has acquired an increasingly visible place within literary history since the end of the nineteenth century as researchers have identified him as the author of a growing list of works. All except one of these works--which include political songs; a volume of rhymed verse on social stations; two world chronicles and a city chronicle; a collection of proverbs; several works on specialized topics such as taxation, economics, and heraldry; and the most recent and sensational attribution, the early prose novel Ein kurtzweilig Lesen von Dil Ulenspiegel (An Entertaining Reading about Till Eulenspiegel, 1510 or 1511; translated, 1518)--were written or published anonymously. Only two were printed during Bote's lifetime; the remaining works were circulated as manuscripts, and several of them have never been published in their entirety.
