Herberto Helder's poetry cannot easily be catalogued under any literary genre, because in each of his books Helder reworks previously used poetic motifs. Every poem that he writes is a transformation of a previous text, which can be his own or that of another writer. The fact that the poet is currently dedicated to the translation of poetry--or what he prefers to call "versions"--is a sign of the textual instability that characterizes all of his works. His biography also reveals a sense of constant change and transformation, which is developed in his Photomaton & vox (1979).
