"Henry Ossawa Tanner was not only one of the most successful black artists in American history, but he was also one of the first Americans of any race to achieve an international reputation," wrote David Conrads in the Christian Science Monitor. Trained under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Tanner eventually found recognition and a living in Paris, France, one of a long line of African-American artists, writers, and musicians to enjoy the easier race relations of Europe.
