Henry Canova Vollam Morton, who wrote under the name H. V. Morton, was called "the greatest living British travel writer" for most of his career. His books, particularly the "In Search of . . ." series, were immensely popular in Great Britain and the United States, and three of his early books, on England, Ireland, and Scotland, were still in print in the 1980s. These books were popular because of his relaxed and vivid writing style and his enthusiasm for his subject matter. Many of Morton's early books were first published serially as daily columns in popular newspapers. Morton's perspective was not that of the discoverer or adventurer but that of a middle-class British citizen who unashamedly took advantage of his private motorcar and comfortable inns and hotels along the way while imaginatively and enthusiastically responding to the countryside and villages.
