Harry J. Grant combined business acumen with editorial vision to make the Milwaukee Journal one of the outstanding twentieth-century newspapers. Although Grant took no direct part in the handling of news, he set the standards in that area and required that they be met. He cherished editorial excellence and freedom above all other newspaper virtues. "We don't trade with politicians," he once said. "We don't make commitments. We must have freedom, freedom, freedom--not to be willful or bigoted or swell headed or to give us delusions of grandeur, but so the Journal can act entirely as it sees best for the community." His statement reflecting similar sentiments, "Go for the truth and to hell with right or left," remains the core of the paper's editorial policy.
