Dictionary of Literary Biography on Harry Bernard
The son of Horace and Alexandra Boudreau Bernard, novelist and journalist Harry Bernard was born in London, England, in 1898. He studied in Paris and in Saint Albans, Vermont, and then at the séminaire in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, where he received his B.A. in 1918. After one year of study in Lowell, Massachusetts, he enrolled at the University of Montreal, where he obtained his licence ès lettres. From 1919 to 1923 Bernard was parliamentary correspondent for Le Droit in Ottawa and eventually became director of Le Courrier de Saint-Hyacinthe, a newspaper with which he was associated from 1923 to 1970. From 1933 to 1934 he was also director of L'Action Nationale in Montreal. During a journalistic career spanning fifty years, Bernard contributed to several newspapers, often using the pseudonym L'Illettré to sign articles and literary reviews.
