In a career that spanned more than sixty years Harriet Prescott Spofford produced thirty-two books, hundreds of short stories and poems, and dozens of nonfiction articles on subjects ranging from her literary acquaintances to the decoration of furniture. Spofford's stories and articles were published in the most prestigious literary periodicals of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including The Atlantic Monthly, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, and Scribner's Monthly . She also contributed frequently to some of the most popular women's magazines of the period, such as Harper's Bazar and Cosmopolitan. She was an important figure in the development of American Romanticism and of American realism. She also wrote works in popular genres such as detective fiction and the supernatural tale.
