Giovanni Papini was one of the most prolific and influential intellectuals of the first half of the twentieth century. His literary production expanded well beyond writing within specific genres, such as the novel, the short story, poetry, and the essay. Throughout his career Papini tended instead to blend several genres into one, which he usually shaped according to the needs and perspective of his own human interests. For this reason his writings compress into a single subject literature, philosophy, religion, and the figurative arts in light of his firm belief in the urgency of these topics for humanity. Papini was also active as a literary editor and founder of important reviews and journals such as Leonardo, Il Regno, Il Commento, La Voce, L'Anima, Lacerba, La Vraie Italie, Frontespizio, and L'Ultima.
