His early books include a volume of poetry and collections of letters he wrote from abroad, such as from Paris and the Far East, when he was reporting for major Italian newspapers. He also published a volume of stories based on his years as a sailor, navigating the high seas of the Adriatic on board fishing boats that set off from the city of Chioggia, and a trio of novels inspired by his relationships with two young men, one of whom was falsely accused of spying for the Germans during World War II.
