Dictionary of Literary Biography on George V(incent) Higgins
George V. Higgins' work has two notable features: its analysis of the motives underlying human character and behavior, and its reliance on dialogue for the revelation of plot, character, and theme. Higgins is well known as the author of novels about criminals; his first, The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1972), a best-seller, was followed by The Digger's Game (1973), and Cogan's Trade (1974). After these, however, he moved to other subjects: Washington politics, police work, and Boston lawyers. Dreamland (1977), his most recent book, is a major achievement. Higgins is a master at the portrayal of character, the creation of suspense, and the designing of tight, well-plotted episodes. In his latest books he has concerned himself with characters who find it necessary to abandon idealistic ambitions in favor of more pragmatic, attainable goals which will make their lives worthwhile.
