Dictionary of Literary Biography on George (Palmer) Garrett

George Garrett was born in Orlando, Florida, on 11 June 1929, the son of George Palmer and Rosalie Toomer Garrett. His marriage to Susan Parrish Jackson in 1952 has produced three children: William, George, and Alice. He attended Sewanee Military Academy and the Hill School before going to Princeton in 1947. He took his B. A. from there in 1952 and then entered the U.S. Army where he served in the Field Artillery before returning to Princeton and earning an M.A. in 1956. He worked as an assistant professor at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut (1956-1960); visiting lecturer at Rice (1961-1962); associate professor at the University of Virginia (1962-1967); writer-in-residence at Princeton (1964-1965); director of graduate studies and writing program at Hollins College (1967-1971); and writer-in-residence and professor of English at the University of South Carolina (1971-1973).
