World of Chemistry on George Castro
George Castro's work in photoconductors and superconductors has led the way to new and improved electrophotographic copying machines as well as digital information storage systems . Additionally, he has worked for twenty-five years in civic activities on behalf of the Hispanic American community to ensure adequate education and employment opportunities.
Castro was born on February 23, 1939, in Los Angeles, California, the second of five children. His parents are both of Mexican descent. Castro grew up in Los Angeles, where he attended Roosevelt High School. Graduating in 1956, Castro won the Los Romanos Scholarship. Although it provided him with only a small amount of money, the scholarship was an important vote of confidence from the local Hispanic community.
