Dictionary of Literary Biography on G(ary) E(dric) Armitage
G. E. Armitage has written a few works under his own name and several under his pseudonym, Robert Edric. His status in contemporary British fiction is rising, and critics have placed his work under categories ranging from murder mystery, horror, and crime to historical fiction. Although many of Armitage's fictional works are related to broad historical events, his themes focus on the everyday reality of individuals.
Gary Edric Armitage was born on 14 April 1956 in Sheffield, England, the son of E. H. Armitage (a store manager) and A. Armitage, née Gregory. He attended the University of Hull, where he graduated in 1977, with honors, with a B.A. degree in geography. On 12 August 1978 he married Sara Jones, a teacher, and in 1980 he graduated with a Ph.D. in geography, writing his Ph.D. thesis on the spatial imagination in Victorian literature.
