Dictionary of Literary Biography on Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo
Amadís de Gaula was the first prose chivalric romance of the Spanish-speaking world. The work is thought to have been first published in 1508 as Los quatro libros del Virtuoso cauallero Amadís de Gaula (The Four Books of the Virtuous Cavalier Amadís of Gaul); in a 1909 article Grace S. Williams mentions an unauthenticated 1496 edition, but it has never been found. The story is continued in Las sergas del virtuoso cauallero Esplandián hijo de Amadís de Gaula (que fueron escritas en griego por la mano de aquel gran maestro Helisabad) (The Deeds of the Virtuous Cavalier Esplandián, son of Amadís of Gaul [Which Were Written in Greek by the Hand of That Great Master Helisabad]), thought to have been written by the same author and published in 1510.
