Dictionary of Literary Biography on Furman Bisher
Furman Bisher's move to Atlanta, Georgia, could not have come at a better time for an up-and-coming sportswriter. Soon after he joined the Atlanta Constitution in 1950, the city began the rapid growth that would result in its becoming the "hub of the South." As the city developed into a major metropolis, it was inevitable that professional sports teams would find their way there. Bisher was uniquely qualified to cover this emerging force in American athletics. He is now one of the country's premier sportswriters; his columns appear regularly in the pages of the Atlanta Journal and Sunday Journal-Constitution , where he serves as sports editor. Additionally, he has written several books and contributed to many periodicals. Much of his writing centers around the South and chronicles the changes that have occurred in that section of the nation in the second half of the twentieth century.
