Dictionary of Literary Biography on Frederik Pohl
There are few science-fiction writers who have been as involved with every phase of the genre as Frederik Pohl. First as a fan and then as a writer, editor, and literary agent, Pohl has influenced and been influenced by every major current in science fiction starting with the publication of Hugo Gernsback's Amazing Stories in 1926. He was one of the first members of the first chapter of the Science Fiction League, and through that fan club and the many that followed (especially the Futurians), Pohl associated with many of the men who were to dominate American science fiction: Joseph Harold Dockweiler (Dirk Wylie), Donald A. Wollheim, James Blish, Isaac Asimov, Cyril Kornbluth, Robert Lowndes, and Damon Knight. As an editor, Pohl first worked for Popular Publications in charge of two magazines: Astonishing Stories and Super Science Stories.
