Dictionary of Literary Biography on Fred(erick) (Thomas) Saberhagen
Born in Chicago, Fred Thomas Saberhagen first attended parochial school in Lombard, Illinois, and later public school in Byron, Illinois. After graduating from Lane Tech High School in Chicago, he finished a two-year degree at Wright Junior College of Chicago. He spent four years (1951-1955) in the air force as an electrical technician, serving in South Dakota, Mississippi, Texas, New Mexico, and England. After leaving the air force, he worked until 1962 as an electronic technician for the Motorola Corporation in Chicago. During this period he published his first story, "Volume PAA-PYX," in Galaxy magazine (February 1961). In 1962 he resigned from Motorola and did free-lance writing until 1967. On 29 June 1968 he married Joan Dorothy Spicci; they have three children--Jill, Eric, and Thomas. Saberhagen worked as an editor for the Encyclopaedia Britannica Corporation from 1967 to 1973.
