Dictionary of Literary Biography on Frederic Henry Hedge
The Reverend Frederic Henry Hedge was an important figure in the cultural history of nineteenth-century America. As a Unitarian minister, theologian, professor of divinity, and language scholar, he exerted a significant influence upon the philosophical, aesthetic, and theological thought of his time. His literary output was formidable. He published more than forty books and pamphlets and sixty-five articles in leading periodicals on a wide range of subjects, as well as many fugitive poems and travel letters, and joint editions. His areas of expertise were language, literature, history, religion, and philosophy. On these subjects he also lectured widely. He was an active member of the American Unitarian Association, Massachusetts Historical Society, Transcendental Club, Town and Country Club, Radical Club, and Examiner Club.
