Dictionary of Literary Biography on Frederic Henry Hedge
Frederic Henry Hedge (12 December 1805-21 August 1890), Unitarian minister, theological writer, and translator of German literature, was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Levi Hedge, a professor at Harvard University, gave his talented son the best education available. Tutored by the brilliant young George Bancroft, who accompanied him to Germany where Hedge attended school from 1818 to 1822, he was granted junior standing when he entered Harvard. Although he considered poetry and medicine as possible careers, Hedge followed his father's wishes and entered the Harvard Divinity School in 1825. After his graduation in 1829, he was ordained pastor at West Cambridge, where he married a girl from his congregation in 1830. His love for Germany and his location kept Hedge from becoming a quiet parish preacher who rarely left home.
