Mildred Cable, Evangeline French, and Francesca French traveled across China for the China Inland Mission--a Bible society established in 1865 to convert the people of China to Christianity. From the time of Evangeline French's arrival in China in 1893 until the three women (often referred to as the "Trio") permanently retired to England on the eve of World War II, their books, credited mainly to Cable and Francesca French, chronicled their work and travels in China. These works might best be grouped into three broad categories: handbooks and missionary biographies written to fellow evangelists, children's books, and travel memoirs. The first two groups are a natural extension of their missionary work; their purpose is to guide and instruct others. Unlike these works, the travel memoirs, which describe the Trio's active participation in Chinese culture, are refreshingly free of didacticism and appeal to a broader audience.
