Dictionary of Literary Biography on Frances Ridley Havergal
Poet Frances Ridley Havergal is principally remembered as an evangelical, low-church hymn writer. A dozen of her hymns appear in the Anglican Book of Common Praise, making her the most fully represented woman hymn writer in that collection. During her lifetime her work was as well known in America as it was in Britain. Shortly after her death Jane McCready of Faith and Works Magazine wrote to Havergal's sister and biographer, Maria Vernon Graham Havergal, from Philadelphia in July 1879: "Her little books, 'My King's Royal Commandments and Royal Bounty,' with 'Daily Thoughts on Coming to Christ,' are the constant companions of a very large number of Christians here, whilst 'Little Pillows' and 'Morning Bells' are dear to many a child's heart."
