Sports Stars on Florence Griffith Joyner

At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, Florence Griffith Joyner, or Flo-Jo as she was better known, was a blur on the racetrack, winning gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and with the U.S. 4 x 100-meter relay team. By doing so, Griffith Joyner became known as "The World's Fastest Woman." She also made news with her unusual track outfits, her long fingernails, her flowing hair, and her bright smile. After she retired from racing, she started new careers in acting, clothes designing, modeling, and writing, and in 1993, she accepted President Bill Clinton's invitation to be co-chairperson for the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Her life was cut short, however, when she suffered a heart seizure at her home in Mission Viejo, California, and died in September 1998, at the age of 38.
