Dictionary of Literary Biography on Fernando (Goncalves) Namora
Fernando Namora lived during the social dynamism in Portugal that changed the shape of Lusitanian literature. He participated in the new literary movement called neorealism. Some writers tried to take fiction in new directions in defiance of the aesthetic ideals established by authors of the Presença Movement (Presença was a literary journal, published between 1927 and 1940, which gave its name to the movement), whose motto was "art for art's sake." If the Generation of 1870, a milestone for realism as exemplified by the works of Eça de Queirós, was able to articulate the thoughts of society at that time, such articulation was possible only through listening to the voice of the middle class.
