Dictionary of Literary Biography on Erwin D(ain) Canham
Erwin Dain Canham was editor of the Christian Science Monitor for nearly three decades; before that he served the newspaper as bureau chief in Geneva, Switzerland, and Washington, D.C. He perpetuated and enlarged founder Mary Baker Eddy's goal of giving readers the tools with which to work out their salvation. Indeed Canham helped make the Christian Science Monitor a nationally and internationally respected newspaper for significant regional articles, arts features, and Washington and foreign correspondence. Intertwined with these accomplishments was his strong sense of ethics. He was widely known and respected in the United States for ethical views on many topical subjects, which he gave in commentaries on weekly network radio and television programs. He also presented them in his speeches and his long-running Monitor column, "Let's Think." Prisoners holding hostages called for Canham to help negotiate their grievances.
