Throughout his life Ernst Lothar remained faithful to a clear set of values, including belief in justice and humanity, the necessity of culture for the improvement of society, the importance of the theater, and, above all, the importance of Austria to the world. He devoted his life as a novelist, short story writer, theater critic, essayist, lyric poet, theater director, government official, and university professor to propagating these views. Even though, as a Jew, he was driven into exile in 1938 after the Anschluß (annexation of Austria by Germany), there is no evidence of any change of outlook in his works. His love of Austria remained dominant throughout his life, and his principles of integrity and honesty never wavered.
