World of Biology on Ernest H. Starling
An experimentalist who discovered a number of significant fundamental facts about the cardiovascular system, Ernest H. Starling is known for his discovery, along with long-time collaborator William Maddock Bayliss, of secretin. In 1902, Starling and Bayliss found that the release of digestive juices by the pancreas is caused by a chemical they named "secretin." Starling later suggested the name "hormone" for any chemical, such as secretin, that is released in one part of the body and causes an effect in another part of the body. In the course of his career, Starling also conducted studies into the circulatory system, as well as into the secretion of lymph and other body fluids. For his work, he was awarded the Medal of the Royal Society, the Baly Medal from the Royal College of Physicians, and several honorary degrees from such institutions as Trinity College, Dublin, the University of Strasburg, and the...
