More than a quarter century of publications testify to a diversity of concerns on the part of E. D. Hirsch, Jr. These manifold concerns include theory of interpretation, nature and development of hermeneutics, Romantic historical scholarship, theory of Romanticism, genre theory, cognitive and evaluative nature of the humanities, theory of meaning, philosophy of science, theory of types, theory of composition, disciplinary rationale of English studies, literacy and cultural knowledge. Yet to itemize diversity may not help to elucidate and clarify the distinctive shape of Hirsch's work and its significant impact on recent American literary criticism and theory.
