In the present age of literary specialization Douglas Goldring's intellectual range and diversity of interests is striking. The author of more than fifty books, he was a biographer, travel writer, poet, novelist, short-story writer, historian, critic, dramatist, and autobiographer. In addition, he had a keen interest in architecture, painting, travel, politics, and fine wines. In South Lodge: Reminiscences of Violet Hunt, Ford Madox Ford and the English Review Circle (1943) Goldring recalls his indignation at being called a mere journalist by Joseph Conrad at a time when the twenty-one-year-old Goldring thought of himself solely as a poet.
