Dictionary of Literary Biography on Dimitur Dimov
Dimitur Dimov is among the most outstanding authors and popular novelists in Bulgarian literature. He established in his native literary tradition a modern style marked by genuine psychological insight, intellectual depth and sophistication, and a rare feeling for dramatic conflicts and the subtleties of language. The critic Krustyo Kuyumdzhiev has called Dimov "a poet and philosopher of the tragic," and he is considered to be the originator of a new tradition in Bulgarian fiction.
Dimov was born on 25 June 1909 in Lovech, Bulgaria, to Todor Dimov and Vesa Kharizanova. His father was a soldier, and his mother was particularly interested in literature and greatly influenced her sons intellectual development. Before the child was two years old, the family moved to Dupnitsa. In this town "Misho" (the nickname used by friends and relatives all his life) spent his early childhood and first school years.
