Born into one of the leading Quaker families in colonial Philadelphia, Deborah Norris Logan was immediately involved in or surrounded by the events that led to the founding of the United States. Her family played host to many important figures in the American Revolution, including John Hancock, Henry Laurens, Francis Lightfoot Lee, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson. As a result of the constant stream of visitors to her family home, Logan became well versed in the political events of the day. When she was fourteen years old, she heard the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence as she stood at the fence in her own yard. As a young girl Logan developed an appreciation of the importance of recording important events for future generations.
