Dictionary of Literary Biography on David Campton
David Campton's theatrical career has been long and prolific. Although he has never received the national recognition that some of his contemporaries have enjoyed, his plays have continued to appeal to audiences through a series of changes in theatrical taste. He has won several prizes, including an Arts Council Bursary for playwriting in 1957; the British Theatre Association Whitworth Prize for Everybody's Friend (1975) in 1975, for After Midnight, before Dawn (1978) in 1978, and for Mrs. Meadowsweet (1985) in 1985; and the Japan Prize for his radio play "Deep Blue Sea" (1975) in 1977. He has written plays for adults, youths, and children; for professional and amateur groups; and for radio and television both in the United Kingdom and abroad.
