Dictionary of Literary Biography on Daniel Berrigan

Daniel Berrigan, SJ, was born in Virginia, Minnesota, one of six sons in a devout Roman Catholic family. He grew up in Syracuse, New York, and entered the Society of Jesus in 1939, recounting in his autobiographical No Bars to Manhood (1970), "I was acquainted with no Jesuits, so it was a matter of an act of faith on both sides. Not a bad arrangement." Berrigan studied at Woodstock College and in 1949, after teaching several years in a New Jersey preparatory school, entered West College (Jesuit) in Weston, Massachusetts, to study theology. In June 1952 he was ordained to the priesthood. From 1954-1957 Berrigan taught at Brooklyn Preparatory School; from 1957-1963 he taught New Testament studies at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York.
