Dictionary of Literary Biography on Clementina Suarez
Clementina Suárez was a pioneer among Honduran women poets. She broke new ground in poetry and life by asserting her independence and her right to overturn the expectations society had of her. Defiantly, she called herself "an army of poets."
Clementina Suárez Zelaya was born on 12 May 1902 in Juticalpa, the capital of the department of Olancho. (Many sources, however, give the year of her birth as 1906.) She was the oldest of four daughters born to Luis Suárez, a lawyer, and Amelia Zelaya Bustillo. Her sisters Rosa and Dolores were born within three years after the poet's birth; her third sister, Graciela, arrived when Suárez was ten. In addition, Suárez had an older half sister, María Luisa Munguía, offspring of a previous relationship her father had before marrying Amelia.
