Dictionary of Literary Biography on Christa Winsloe
Christa Winsloe's reputation as a German-language dramatist rests entirely on a single play--which, paradoxically, has never been published in German. This play, commonly but inaccurately known as Mädchen in Uniform (Girls in Uniform), reached an international audience in the early 1930s, but not under either of the two titles the author gave it: Ritter Nérestan (The Knight Nérestan; performed, 1930) and Gestern und Heute (Yesterday and Today; performed, 1931). It was made into a film as Mädchen in Uniform (1931) that Winsloe, who collaborated on the screenplay, repudiated by writing a novelized version under the title Das Mädchen Manuela (1933; translated as The Child Manuela, 1933). The book has also enjoyed international success, often under the same title assigned to the play and the film.
