Dictionary of Literary Biography on Charlotte S(hapiro) Zolotow

Charlotte Shapiro Zolotow, born to Louis J. and Ella Bernstein Shapiro on 26 June 1915, in Norfolk, Virginia, studied literature at the University of Wisconsin from 1933 to 1936 before joining the children's book department of Harper and Brothers in 1936. She married writer Maurice Zolotow on 14 April 1938. They had two children and were divorced in 1969. Charlotte Zolotow served as senior editor in the children's division at Harper from 1938 to 1944 and again from 1962 until 1976, when she became vice-president, associate publisher of Harper Junior Books, and editorial consultant. On 29 September 1981 Zolotow resigned as vice-president and associate publisher when given her own imprint, Charlotte Zolotow Books, for the 1982 Harper Junior Books list, though she remains editorial consultant for the department she has long served.
