Dictionary of Literary Biography on Charles L(eonard) Harness
Charles Leonard Harness, patent lawyer and science-fiction writer, is the son of Conrad T. and Lillian B. Harness. Born in Colorado City, Texas, he was educated at George Washington University, where he took a B.S. in 1942 and an LL.B. in 1946. He and his wife, Nell, whom he married 27 July 1938, have two children, Mollie and Charles. His career as a science-fiction writer has been somewhat sporadic. His first published story, "Time Trap," appeared in the August 1948 Astounding Science-Fiction. The following year saw the publication of his first novel, Flight Into Yesterday, in the May 1949 Startling Stories; later expanded, it was his first book publication in 1953. Harness quickly established a reputation among editors and fellow writers for his competent prose; he has been praised by such writers as Arthur C. Clarke and Brian Aldiss.
