Dictionary of Literary Biography on Charles (H.), (Jr.) Fuller
The second African American playwright to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize, Charles Fuller is well known for his social plays, which probe into what he calls "the madness of race in America." His primary mission as a writer is to rectify stereotypes of African Americans; as he told David Savran in a 1988 interview: "It's very important for me as a black writer to change how Western civilization--which includes black people--perceives black people. That's at the heart of what I do." Most of his plays are grounded in history, with an understanding that history itself is in need of revision and can benefit from a new perspective. Fuller explained to interviewer Frank White III in 1983 that he prefers a military setting for his plays because it enables "men to confront men.
