Dictionary of Literary Biography on Ashley Dukes
Ashley Dukes is perhaps better known as manager, critic, theater enthusiast, scholar, and translator and adapter of Continental drama that he is as a playwright of original works. Only in his romantic comedy The Man with a Load of Mischief (1924) has he written a play of his own which merits mention.
Dukes the son of Edwin J. and Edith Mary Pope Dukes, was born at Bridgewater and educated at Silcoates School, the University of Manchester, and the University of Munich. He made an early reputation as a dramatist with the success of The Man with a Load of Mischief. He also became well known as a drama critic, working for the New Age (1909-1911), Vanity Fair (1912-1914), the Star (1913-1914), and the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News (1920-1924).
