Dictionary of Literary Biography on Arnold Zweig
No better example may be found for the different emphases of literary history in the German Democratic Republic and in the Federal Republic of Germany than the case of Arnold Zweig. Zweig was the most celebrated living author in the German Democratic Republic, where he lived from 1948 until his death in 1968. Many of his novels have been published in large editions there. Festschriften appeared on his birthdays, and in 1962 Johanna Rudolph edited a book, Arnold Zweig, to serve as a guide for school festivities honoring the author and his work. In 1958 the Aufbau-Verlag in Berlin began to publish Zweig's collected works. Not all the works that were published in the German Democratic Republic are still in print, but Zweig remains a well-known writer and the subject of much scholarly work.
