Dictionary of Literary Biography on Angela Figuera
Angela Figuera belongs chronologically not to the "mid-century generation," with whose writings her own are grouped, but to the "Generation of 1927," which included Federico García Lorca, Vicente Aleixandre, Rafael Alberti, Luis Cernuda, and many lesser poets. She began publishing relatively late in life, at the age of forty-six, and has been included by some commentators as the third member of the postwar "Basque triumvirate," with Gabriel Celaya and Blas de Otero (usually considered the leaders of the social poets, while Figuera is often overlooked). Chronological differences may partially explain some critical forgetfulness of Figuera, but traditional critical neglect of women writers cannot be discounted as a factor. Her wartime Republican ties may also have played a part.
