Dictionary of Literary Biography on Angel Gonzalez
Angel González has most frequently been identified with a group of poets whose literary careers began with publications in the decade of the 1950s. The poetry of this so-called Generation of 1950, in basic terms, represented a response or reaction to the works of literary artists who immediately preceded them in Spain. The "poesía social" (social poetry) of these earlier writers was primarily a literature of protest and denunciation, caused by, and directed against, the prevailing sociopolitical situation of Spain in the years following the devastation related to the civil war. The poets of the Generation of 1950 continued to produce works directed to social themes, though not as consistently as their predecessors.
