Like many Canadian science-fiction writers, Andrew Weiner was born elsewhere and came to Canada as an adult. Although he has published one novel, four collections, and more than fifty short stories, he is possibly better known as a writer of nonfiction. One of Canada's most prolific short-story writers, Weiner has published in prestigious periodicals and anthologies in several countries and has received nominations for awards in both the United Kingdom and Canada. His stories have been reprinted frequently, some in other languages, and three have been filmed for television.

Andrew Simon Weiner was born on 17 June 1949 in London, England, to Joseph Weiner, a Russian-born cabinetmaker who came to England at the age of five, and Rachel Papier, a native of the United Kingdom.
