Dictionary of Literary Biography on Anders Arrebo
The literary achievements of Anders Arrebo heralded a new era in Danish literature, marking the arrival of baroque poetry in Denmark. Arrebo is considered the first important Danish poet to break with the poetic forms of the Middle Ages by mastering and developing a metrical system, which is the norm in Germanic languages. Arrebo created the foundation for modern Danish poetry by consistently applying the accent principle to the construction of poetic stanzas (that is, regular alternation between stressed and unstressed syllables). His break with the traditions of the Middle Ages and late Middle Ages began in 1623 with his translation of the Book of Psalms and was further developed in the revised edition of 1627.
