Alfred Kubin produced some of the most exciting graphic and literary art known to the West. He grew up in a world undergoing dramatic technological and intellectual change, and his powerful artistic interpretation of that world sets his achievements apart from other artists of the period. To discover new and fresh images he allowed his imagination to enter the domain of the subconscious and to roam freely through the territory of dream. Through his experience of the subconscious he was able to perceive relationships among all things, a unity that negated the seeming contradictions between the real and the imagined.
